Leaving your hotel early morning we travel to Bulgaria. Crossing the Danube, the frontier between the two countries, you can admire the 2nd largest river in Europe “the king of European rivers” as Napoleon called it.
Passing by the city of Ruse we arrive in the region of the Ivanovo Churches(the most famous one being Basarabovski). They have been a part of the UNESCO world heritage since 1979. A complex of rock – hewn churches, chapels and monasteries show a remarkable artistic sensitivity for the 14th century paintings and Bulgarian art. Monasticism was founded here during the 13th century by the future Patriarch of Bulgaria, Joachim. All the most beautiful churches are located in the magnificent valley of the river Lom Rusenski.
The trip continues to the most beautiful city in Bulgaria, Veliko Tarnovo also known as “the Tsar’s city”. Situated on the river Yantra, Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the 2nd Bulgarian Empire and one of the most resistant fortification in the area. Still today, the fortress is impressive and remains one of Bulgaria’s main attractions. Enjoy your time at leisure to explore the old Palace of the Tsars and the old Patriarchal church rebuilt in the modern times.
Enjoy a traditional lunch in Veliko Tarnovo.
We can also take the opportunity to explore the city on foot via old roads to admire the beautiful local architecture in this wonderful landscape. Then we travel onto nearby Arbanassi, a picturesque small city with a powerful medieval atmosphere, and walk around the centre admiring the beautiful houses of this traditional city. Late in the afternoon we return to Bucharest.
